    An electron-accepting compound is represented by the formula : wherein X represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, a hydroxyl, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkyl, alkoxy, allyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl group ; Ar represents an arylene group containing 2 to 5 benzene rings, or having said rings condensed thereto or a bisarylene group in which arylene groups are connected to each other via a divalent group ; and R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl or aryloxyalkyl. Preferably R is H ; and Ar is -C6H4-0-C6H4-. A novel recording material, heat- or pressure-sensitive, contains one of these compounds and at least one electron-providing colorless dye precursor, e.g. a fluoran, dispersed in a binder on a support. Color images are obtained without background fog or discoloration.

    A phthalide compound of general formula (I) and a near infrared absorber and a recording material each utilizing the phthalide compound are disclosed. wherein ring A represents a substituent group of the following formula    where R₁ represents hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy or halogen; n represents an integer of 1-3; ring B represents a defined aromatic ring; R₂ represents alkyl or aryl; R₃ represents alkyl; R₄ and R₅ independently represent alkyl or unsubstituted or substituted phenyl; R₆ represents hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy. The near infrared absorber and the recorded image on the recording material absorb strongly the near infrared region with no appreciable absorption in the visible region of the spectrum. The near infrared absorber is colorless or pale in color and yet highly capable of absorbing near infrared radiation. The recorded image on the recording material can hardly be read with the eye but can be read with the OCR. Moreover, the effect on the developed shade of any concomitant color former in a recording material is minimal.

    The content of compound(s) having a molecular weight of 650-670, preferably a molecular weight of 660, as measured by mass spectrometry, is reduced to 0.5 mass% or less in a heat-sensitive recording material comprising 3,3'-diallyl-4,4'-dihydroxy diphenylsulfone, or in a diphenylsulfone or a color-developing agent. Provided is, thereby, a heat-sensitive recording material, a color-developing agent, or a diphenylsulfone which cause less background fogging under moisture and heat conditions and which has excellent preservation stability of a colored image.
