Cyclic carbonates are important compounds for the synthesis of biocompatible polymers and linear dialkyl carbonates, as well as solvents and electrolytes. We report here the synthesis of such compounds from easily accessible starting materials with carbondioxide as a C1 source and caesium carbonate as the base. This new methodology is able to yield 5- and 6-membered cyclic carbonates very efficiently
Synthesis and acidity of conformationally constrained 1,3-oxathiane S-oxides

Conformationally constrained 5-tert-butyl 1,3-oxathiane was synthesized and oxidation led to the diastereoisomeric sulfoxides and the respective sulfone. Stereoelectronic effects are discussed for these compounds and their corresponding 2-carbanions. pKa values are calculated for these compounds and compared with the respective 1,3-dithiane-derived sulfide, the sulfoxides, and the sulfone.
