    End-Cap Stabilized Oligoynes: Model Compounds for the Linear sp Carbon Allotrope Carbyne

    Three series of differently 3,5-disubstituted alpha,omega-diphenylpolyynes Ar-(CdropC)(n)-Ar (n=2, 4, 6, 8, 10) were synthesized under optimized Cadiot-Chodkiewicz conditions, isolated and completely characterized. These compounds can be considered as model substances for the hypothetical one-dimensional carbon allotrope carbyne C, The longest sp-carbon chain contains 20 atoms and is therefore the longest, purely organic polyyne studied with NMR techniques. Extinction coefficients over 600000m(-1)cm(-1) represent the highest measured quantitative values for that compound class so far. Comparisons with previous investigations and electrochemical studies allow the assignment of absorption for both wavelength regions structuring the UV/Vis spectra. Based on the trends in the spectroscopic behaviour of those molecules with increasing chain length. electronic as well as the NMR properties of carbyne are predicted, in line with our previously reported results. The observed stability mise the. properties pro synthesis of even longer polyynes.

  • Induced self-assembly and disassembly of water-soluble alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridyl complexes with “switchable” near-infrared (NIR) emission modulated by metal–metal interactions over physiological pH: demonstration of pH-responsive NIR luminescent probes in cell-imaging studies

    Water-soluble alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes, [Pttpy(C6H4CH2NMe3-4)-4′}(CC–Ar)](OTf)2 [Ar = C6H3–(OH)2-3,5 (1), C6H4OH-4 (2), C6H3–(OMe)2-3,5 (3)], have been synthesized and characterized. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the complexes have been studied. Complex 1 has been found to undergo aggregation at low pHs, leading to metal–metal and/or π–π interactions and the emergence of a triplet metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MMLCT) emission in the near-infrared (NIR) region, the intensity of which has been enhanced 1350-fold over that at physiological pH. Such ‘switchable’ NIR emission of complex 1 was employed in cell-imaging experiments. The pH response of the 3MMLCT emission of complex 1 in cellular compartments has been studied using experiments with fixed Madin–Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, while live cell-imaging experiments revealed that complex 1 could function as a NIR luminescent probe for the tracking of the location of acidic organelles such as lysosomes.

    Poly[4-(t-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-2-trimethylsilylphenylacetylene] and poly[5-ethynyl-3-(t-butyldimethylsilyloxy)phenyl (R)-2-phenylpropionate] were desilylated with Bu4NF in THF. The solution changed its color depending on the structure of the aromatic pendants.

    A proton exchange membrane is obtained which can give an excellent power generation characteristic when the membrane is applied to, in particular, a fuel cell wherein high-concentration methanol is used as a fuel. In the aromatic hydrocarbon based proton exchange membrane of the invention, the ion exchange capacity is set into the range of 0.6 to 1.3 meq/g. Moreover, the area swelling rate for a 30% by mass methanol aqueous solution at 40°C is set into the range of 2 to 30%. Preferably, a sulfonic acid group is bonded to an aromatic ring of the aromatic hydrocarbon based polymer contained in the aromatic hydrocarbon based proton exchange film. Preferably, the aromatic hydrocarbon based polymer is a polyarylene ether based polymer.

    The present invention relates to a sulfonic acid group-containing polymer excellent in ion conductivity and durability, a method for producing the same, a resin composition containing the sulfonic acid group-containing polymer, a polymer electrolyte membrane, a polymer electrolyte membrane/electrode assembly, and a fuel cell.
