A photochemical aerobic oxidation protocol of sulfides to sulfoxides utilizing a benzthioxanthene imide as the photocatalyst at a low catalyst loading (0.01 mol %), water as the reaction mediator and oxygen from the atmospheric air as the oxidant under blue LED irradiation to afford excellent yields in a variety of substrates.
