  @ A 3-(hydrocarbylthio)propionaldehyde is reacted with a compound to make a compound of the formula this latter compound is reacted with CO and R"YH where Y is ○ or S to make this compound is hydrolyzed to produce methionine hydroxy analog or a derivative thereof. The process avoids the use of HCN. 1-Propionyloxy-3-methylthiopropene and the methyl ester of 2-acetoxy-4-(methylthio)thiobutanoic acid are disclosed as new compounds.
