    Copolymers comprising: (a) 60 to 99% by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of N-vinyllactams, N-vinylamides, and mixtures thereof; (1) 1 to 40% by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of vinyl esters of aliphatic branched C 8 -C 30 -carboxylic acids; (c) 0 to 30% by weight of vinyl acetate; and (d) 0 to 39% by weight of at least one additional free-radically copolymnerizable monomer; wherein the % by weight content of components (a), (b), (c) and (d) totals 100%, and with the proviso that the total amount of component (b) and component (c) combined is 1 to 40% by weight based on the copolymer, are described along with methods of using such copolymers to solubilize substances which are insoluble in water, substances which are only sparingly soluble in water, and combinations thereof.

    The invention relates to a method for producing carboxylic acid amides, according to which at least one carboxylic acid of formula (I) R 3 —COON   (I) wherein R 3 is hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical comprising between 1 and 50 carbon atoms, is reacted with at least one amine of formula (II) HNR 1 R 2 (II) wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical comprising between 1 and 100 C atoms, to form an ammonium salt, and said ammonium salt is reacted in the presence of superheated water, under microwave irradiation, to form a carboxylic acid amide.

    The present invention relates to a process for the production of N-substituted acrylic acid amides by conversion of 2-carboalkoxy-t-oxabicyclo(2,2,1)hept-5-enes with primary or secondary amines to 2-carboxamide-7-oxabicyclo(2,2,1)hept-5-enes and the thermal decomposition of the latter, preferably in the presence of Lewis acids and in a vacuum, to furane and N-substituted acrylic acid amides. The process according to the invention results in high purity N-substituted acrylic acid amides that are, in the main, free of bifunctional monomers which would disrupt the subsequent polymerization of the N-substituted acrylic acid amides by undesired cross-linking.
