  N-Alkenyl and N-alkoxymethyl lactams are impervious to many reagents and are useful protecting groups for lactams. Conversion to the corresponding 2-ethoxy iminium salt and hydrolysis in neutral water removes the protecting group. Mild basification regenerates the lactam.

  Glutamic acid is readily converted into N-butenyl-2-pyrrolidinone-5-carboxaldehyde. The novel butenyl protecting group allows the synthesis of this aldehyde which can be olefinated using standard Wittig methodology.

  We have examined routes for the preparation of 2-pyrrolidinone-5S-carboxaldehyde which include oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-pyrrolidinone and reduction of 5-oxoproline ethylester. Only the oxidation route proved satisfactory. Moffatt oxidation was most efficient but PCC oxidation gave modest yields of the desired aldehyde.
