                                    The condensation of dipyrrylmethane 1b with -nitrobenzaldehyde furnishes, upon oxidation with chloranil, 5,15-di(-nitrophenyl) porphyrin 4b in 45% yield and condensation of the same dipyrrylmethane with 2,6-dinitro or 2,6-diacetamido benzaldehyde affords unexpectedly octaalkylporphyrin 5 (15–20% yield) and monoaryl porphyrin 6 (2% yield).
