    A fluorinated carbazole, 9,9'-[2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-biphenyl-4,4'-diyl]bis(9H-carbazole) (6FCBP) was prepared, which exhibited better solubility compared to the well-known hole-transporting material 4,4'-bis(carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl (CBP). 6FCBP was employed to fabricate OLEDs by spin coating or vacuum deposition with excellent performance.

    The first object of the present invention is to provide a blue phosphorescent light-emitting organic electroluminescent (EL) device driven at low voltage, and a display and illuminating device each using such an organic EL device. The second object of the present invention is to provide an organic EL device having long life, and an illuminating device and display each using such an organic EL device. Each organic EL device comprises an electrode and at least one organic layer on a substrate, and at least one of the organic layers is a light-emitting layer containing a host compound and a phosphorescent compound. In order to accomplish the first object, the host compound has an HOMO of from −7.20 to −5.42 eV and an LUMO of from −2.30 to −0.50 eV, and the phosphorescent compound is represented by the general formula (1). In order to accomplish the second object, the host compound is an electron-transporting host compound having an excited triplet energy T 1 of not less than 2.7 eV, and the phosphorescent compound has an HOMO of from −5.15 to −3.50 eV and an LUMO of from −1.25 to +1.00 eV.

    We report a series of CBP-derivatives with superior thermal and electronic properties for the use as host materials for blue electrophosphorescent organic light emitting diodes. We applied a systematic variation of the substitution pattern in the 2- and 2′-position of the biphenyl unit and the 3- and 6-position of the carbazole moieties. In contrast to the crystalline parent compound CBP, all methyl and trifluoromethyl substituted derivatives show amorphous behaviour. Substitution in the 2- and 2′-position of the biphenyl causes a twisting of the phenyl rings. Hence, the degree of conjugation of the molecules is limited which leads to enlarged triplet energies of approximately 2.95 eV compared to 2.58 eV for CBP. The methyl substitution at the active 3- and 6-position of the pendant carbazole units yields materials with an electrochemically stable behaviour against oxidation.
