  alpha,omega-Dicarboxylic acid dimethyl esters are easily obtained by ring cleavage of alpha-nitrocycloalkanones. Thus, reaction of the latter compounds with three equivalents of potassium persulfate, in methanol and in presence of sulfuric acid at 80 degrees C, provides alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl esters in high yields. Long-chain, and alkylated alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl esters can be also efficiently obtained. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
