Two insect pheromones along with other spiro-ketals have been synthesised by a newroute which involves Horner-Wittig coupling of 2-diphenylphosphinoxy cyclic ethers with aldehydes and lactols followed by acid catalysed cyclisation.

Hydrophosphination of alkenylalkyl ethers catalyzed by Pd- and Ni-complexes is described. The reaction is regioselective giving only Markovnikov product isolated as α-alkoxyalkyldiphenyl oxide after oxidation by H2O2.

6-alkyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrans is highly stereoselective and gives tri-substituted alkenes with retention of configuration. The method was applied to the synthesis of (E)-3-Acetoxy-7-methyl-6-nonene, the aggregation phermone of the square-neckedgrainbeetle.

The Ni0-catalysed coupling of Grignard reagents devoid of beta-hydrogens with 6-alkyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrans and acyclic enol ethers is highly stereoselective and gives trisubstituted alkenes with retention of configuration. The reaction was applied to syntheses of the aggregation pheromone of the square-necked grain beetle, a fragment of Premonensin B, and the polyketide fragment of Jaspamide.

Diphenylphosphine adds to alkyl vinyl ethers in the presence of Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes with a high regioselectivity, leading to exclusive formation of the corresponding Markownikoff adducts which were isolated as 1-alkoxyalkyl(diphenyl)phosphine oxides via oxidation with hydrogen peroxide.
