Abstract A preparation in ‘dry media’ of phenothiazine derivatives by thionation of diphenylamines using microwave-activation is presented. This method allowed the preparation of 2,4,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-10H-phenothiazine 2e, the first 2,4,6,8-tetra-substituted derivative of this heterocycle, practically inaccessible by other thionation procedure.

Diaryl sulphides and diaryl selenides of formula: Ar--X--Ar where X=S or Se and Ar=aryl are made by the action of sulphur and sulphur dioxide or selenium and selenium dioxide on a compound of formula: Ar--H The process is especially useful for the preparation of phenothiazines of formula ##STR1## in which X=S or Se and Z and Z.sub.1, which may be identical or different, are each hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy.
The invention provides a method of producing alkylene glycol monosorbates which comprises reacting sorbic acid and an alkylene oxide having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in a certain system containing a solvent inactive to the alkylene glycol monosorbates, one or more iron catalysts and one or more compounds consisting of phenothiazines and alkylphenols, washing the obtained synthesized liquid with an aqueous (bi)carbonate solution, and then purifying the washed liquid by distillation, and a method of reserving the alkylene glycol monosorbates.
