    Over recent years, little attention has been paid to the electrooptic properties of racemic modifications of smectic liquid crystals, however, in this communication we report on a chiral response of a racemic modification to an applied electrical field while in its synclinic smectic C phase.

  • A Novel Class of Photo- and Electroactive Polymers Containing Oxadiazole and Amine Moieties in a Side Chain

    A new class of photo- and electroactive polymer materials showing an liquid-crystalline (LC) phase were designed and synthesized: four kinds of polymers with both oxadiazole and arylamine moieties as carrier-transporting groups in the side chain. Among them, the polymers with a dimethylamine and a methylcarbazole moiety show LC phases. Furthermore, all the polymers emitted strong blue fluorescence, and their fluorescent quantum yields were over 0.6. The aligned sample of the polymer with the carbazole moiety emitted polarized fluorescence at room temperature. One-layer type electroluminescent (EL) devices were fabricated by using the polymer with a triphenylamine moiety, which exhibited the highest quantum yield (similar to0.82), and found to emit the EL emission at blue region.

    The present invention relates to a compound of the general structure of formula (I): X-Alkylene1-A-1-Alkylene2-A2-(Z1)x-B-(Z2)y-C-(Z3)z-A3-Alkyl3 in which A1, A2 and A3, which may be the same or different, are each -O-, -COO-, -OCO- or -S-; Z1, Z2 and Z3, which may be the same or different, may each be selected from the group : Formula (a) : in which the cyclic rings may be laterally substituted by hydrogen, -CH3, -CF3, -CN, -NO2, halogen, e.g., F, Cl, Br, B and C, which may be the same or different, are each selected from the group: single bond, -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2O-, -CF=CF- or -C=C-; X is selected from the group: cycloalkyl, bicycloalkyl and polycycloalkyl; and x, y and z, which may be the same or different, are each an integer, being 1 or 2, as the racemate, the S or the R enantiomers or mixtures thereof.

    Through the incorporation of partially fluorinated and branched fluorinated end-groups of ferroelectric liquid crystals we aimed to examine the effects on physico-chemical structures and properties, and electrical switching behaviour for a family of compounds based upon the MHPOBC motif. We show that the nature of the terminal group strongly affects the liquid crystal behaviour and the thresholds associated with electro-optic switching. In this article we present the synthesis, transition temperatures, electro-optical measurements and X-ray diffraction studies for a series of compounds.
