Mild and Efficient Vicinal Dibromination of Olefins Mediated by Aqueous Ammonium Fluoride

A mild and efficient vicinal dibromination of olefins has been developed by using saturated aqueous ammonium fluoride solution as the promoter. Inexpensive and commercially available N -bromosuccinimide (NBS) was used as the brominating reagent. The corresponding vicinal dibromoalkanes could be obtained in good to excellent yields.

Bromination of alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic amines has efficiently been carried out at room temperature in short reaction times using HIO3/KBr in CH2Cl2/H2O (1:1) to prepare corresponding brominated compounds in excellent yields.

The $VCl_3$/In system was found to be a new protocol for debromination of a variety of vic-dibromides to the corresponding alkenes in high yields with short reaction times under mild conditions. This new methodology is highly chemoselective, tolerating several functional groups such as chloro, bromo, fluoro, keto, ester, carboxyl, and methoxy groups.
