A series of new lipophilic acyclic polyethers containing two carboxylic or hydroxamic acid groups have been prepared. From lipophilic acyclic polyether dicarboxylic acids 2, 9 and 13, the bis(crownethers) 20–25 were synthesized. From lipophilic acyclic polyether dicarboxylic acids 10–12 and 14, the new macrocyclic diamides 26–32 were prepared in high yields without the use of high dilution techniques

A method for forming thin films on substrates. The method includes the steps of forming a self-assembled monolayer film on a substrate where one end of the monolayer bonds to the substrate and the other end forms a surface capable of initiating the formation of a desired film. A preferred method of the invention involves formation of diamond layers over substrates.

A method for the production of ω-haloalkyl esters which are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of cis-oxacycloheptadec-11-en-2-one (Product I) and cis-oxacycloheptadec-12-en-2-one (Product II). Also disclosed is a process for the synthesis of Products I-II and a method for using Products I-II to impart an ambery or musky smell to a fragrance composition. Finally, fragrance compositions including Products I-II are disclosed as well as end products such as perfume extracts, toilet waters, cosmetic preparations, soaps, detergents and functional products, each of which also contains at least one of Products I-II.
