  A series of N,N'-linked 1,2-ethanediyl-poly(benzimidazolin-2-ones) that can be classified as podands, are described. Seven dimers (21-27), three trimers (28-30), a cyclic tetramer (31) and an open-chain benzimidazolin-2-one heptamer (32) have been prepared and characterized by H-1, C-13 NMR and by MS, The crystal and molecular structure of the trimer, 1,3-bis-2-(2-oxobenzimidazol-1-yl)ethyl-2-oxobenzimide monohydrate (30) has been solved by X-Ray analysis. The benzimidazolin-2-one fragments display a pattern of bond distances and angles similar to that of analogue derivatives retrieved form the CSD. The molecules are hydrogen bonded to four others in a continuous two-dimensional network by N-H ... O=C and C-H ... O=C interactions in which all N-H donors and O=C accepters are involved.   The reaction of cyclic amides with acetylene under low pressure, using ruthenium-phosphine catalysts, afforded a broad variety of N-vinylated amides including (azabicyclic) lactams, oxazolidinones, benzoisoxazolones, isoindolinones, quinoxalinones, oxazinanones, cyclic urea derivatives (imidazolidinones), nucleobases (thymine), amino acid anhydrides and thiazolidinone.

  Branched polymers are prepared from at least (A) at least one monomer having an electron donor moiety, (B) at least one monomer having an electron acceptor moiety, and (C) at least one multifunctional branching agent comprising a urea moiety and at least two N-vinyl groups. The branched polymers are least 20% (by weight) soluble in a solvent for which the corresponding polymer of equal molecular weight made without said multifunctional branching agent is at least 20% (by weight) soluble. Due in part to the wide range of chemistries and solubility and rheological properties, the branched polymers find application in personal care, pharmaceutical/nutritional, and performance chemicals compositions.

  The reaction of 2-aminobenzimidazole (1) with acetylene under pressure proceeds with the formation of vinyl monomers, corresponding to amine and imine forms, 1-vinyl-2-amino- and 1,3-divinyl-2-iminobenzimidazoles, depending on the reaction conditions. 1,3-Divinyl-2-benzimidazolone was also isolated in aqueous dioxane in addition to the monovinyl derivative of 1. Cyclization of the divinyl derivative of 1 with acetylene proceeds to give 9-vinyl-1,2-dimethylimidazo[1,2-a]-benzimidazole.
