diisopropylamide (LDA), and chlorotrimethylsilane affords the corresponding 1-(trimethylsilyloxy)-2-trimethylsilylbenzocyclobutene derivatives. Alternatively, (o-lithiomethyl-o′-methoxy)phenyl ketones cyclize spontaneously or with an aid of chlorotrimethylsilane to give benzocyclobuten-1-ols or their trimethylsilyl ethers respectively.
