The synthesis, purification and characterization of seven isomeric nitrocyclopenta[cd]-pyrenes (nitroCPPs) are described. Nitration of partially hydrogenated CPPs affords mixtures of nitro derivatives, which, after separation, are aromatized with DDQ.
