The complete series of all possible benzenes bearing one deuterium atom and one to five methyl groups was synthesized. The deuteriumisotopeeffects on the carbon chemicalshifts of the aromatic and aliphatic carbon atoms were measured and shown to obey an empirical increment system. The isotopeeffects over one bond correlate with the C,H spin coupling constants.
Halogenation Using Quaternary Ammonium Polyhalides. XIV. Aromatic Bromination and Iodination of Arenes by Use of Benzyltrimethylammonium Polyhalides–Zinc Chloride System
The reaction of arenes with benzyltrimethylammonium tribromide or benzyltrimethylammonium dichloroiodate in acetic acid in the presence of ZnCl2 at room temperature or at 70 °C gave bromo- or iodo-substituted arenes in good yield, respectively.
The enantiomers (M) and (P) of helical 9, 10-phenanthrenequinones were enriched by liquid chromatography with enantiomeric purities of 0.31 to 0.95. Their barriers to racemization (Table 2) were compared with the ones of the corresponding hydrocarbons.

5-Halo-2,3,4,6-tetramethyl- and 6-halo-2,3,4,5-tetramethylbenzyl nitrate were the principal products. 4-Halo-2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzyl nitrate was never formed in any significant amount. The orientation was consistent with the previously suggested mechanistic scheme. PMR spectral data for nine halotetramethylbenzyl chlorides and nitrates have been presented.
Syntheses of Diiodo and Triiodo Derivatives of 1,2,3-Trimethylbenzene (<i>Hemimellitene</i>) and 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene (<i>Pseudocumene</i>). A Convenient Use of Polyiodo Derivatives for the Characterization of Polyalkylbenzenes and Their Derivatives

A complete set of diiodo and triiodo derivatives of 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene has been prepared and their physicalproperties are recorded. Use of polyiodo derivatives as a means for characterizing polyalkylbenzenes and their derivatives has been proposed.
