The combination of an ammoniumsalt and ethylenediamine promotes deacylation of a variety of unactivatedamides to give the corresponding amines in high yields without the use of strong acids or bases. The reactions proceed without special care regarding air and moisture, and tolerate a wide range of functional groups.

Regioselective functionalization of anilines in the presence of aliphaticamines is illustrated utilizing classic conditions for the Baeyer-Mills reaction. Further, the defined principles of reactivity are shown to be broadly extended to other electrophiles.
