Two chiral chelate nitrogen–phosphorus ligands derived from (S)-valine, with the potential for stereogenic nitrogen donors, gave dramatically different enantioselectivities, ranging from 92% ee (R) to 83% ee (S), in the palladium catalysed allylic substitution reaction.
