A simple, one-step procedure for the synthesis of diaryliodonium salts is described. It is shown that the electrochemical oxidation of an aryl iodide at a carbon felt anode in acetic acid/25% acetic anhydride/5% sulfuric acid in the presence of an arene leads to a diaryliodonium salt in good yield. The method allows the preparation of unsymmetrical, as well as symmetrical diaryliodonium salts. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polyfunctional molecules are prepared by a modified stereoselective Heck-type cross-coupling reaction between iodine heterocyclic compounds and olefins in DMF using Pd(OAc)2 as a catalyst in the presence of bases (Na2CO3 or K2CO3). This coupling reaction proceeds smoothly at room temperature and gave coupling products in high yields.

Various possible routes to the synthesis of 2,2′-dihalogenobiphenyls have been investigated. The pyrolysis of biphenylene iodonium affords 2-chloro-2′-iodobiphenyl in useful yield. 2-Chloro-2′-lithiobiphenyl has been used in the synthesis of 4-trifluormethyl-; 3,4-dimethyl-; 3,5-dimethyl-; and 3,4-dimethoxytriphenylene.
