The reaction of diarylketones such as benzophenone with aminoalkylbenzotriazoles in the presence of ytterbium metal at room temperature has been found to give 2-amino alcohols in good yields under mild and neutral conditions.

In the presence of a catalytic amount of a lanthanide triflate, N-(α-aminnoalkyl)benzotriazoles reacted with silylenolates to give the corresponding β-amino ketone or ester derivatives in high yields with high diastereoselectivities.

N-Aryl-1H-benzotriazolyl-1-methanamines 1, easily accessible from the condensation of anilines with formaldehyde and benzotriazole, undergo Lewis acid assisted reactions with allyltrimethylsilanes to give 4-(trimethylsilyl)methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines 2 in good to high yields.
