Chemoselective sulfur oxidation of functionalized sulfides was developed using catalytic amounts of MnSO4·H2O (1 mol%) and 30% H2O2 in the presence of a buffer solution of NaHCO3. An extremely convenient desulfonylation method of primary, secondary, tertiary alkyl and vinyl phenylsulfones was developed by using magnesium in ethanol in the presence of catalytic amount of mercuric chloride to give the corresponding alkanes and alkene in almost quantitative yields.
