Triptycene-Based Organic Molecules of Intrinsic Microporosity

Four Organic Molecules of Intrinsic Microporosity (OMIMs) were prepared by fusing triptycene-based components to a biphenyl core. Due to their rigid molecular structures that cannot pack space efficiently, these OMIMs form amorphous materials with significant microporosity as demonstrated by apparent BET surface areas in the range of 515-702 m(2) g(-1). Bulky cyclic 1',2',3',4'-tetrahydro-1',1',4',4'-tetramethylbenzo units placed on the triptycene termini are especially efficient at enhancing microporosity.

naphthazarin quinone Diels–Alder adduct 10 is additionally demonstrated and enables us to direct its subsequent reactivity. Finally, this work serves to demonstrate the potential for naphthazarin as a buildingblock in the synthesis of novelorganic electronic materials.

The synthesis of new heterocyclic oligo(phenylene) analogues based on soluble, nonaggregating 1,2-diazines is reported. Improved palladium-catalyzed reductive coupling methods were developed to allow for the preparation of large quantities of iptycene-derived bipyridazines and biphthalazines, and the controlled synthesis of well-defined oligomers up to sexipyridazine. Crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational evidence indicate that in these analogues, hindrance at the ortho position is relaxed relative to poly(phenylenes). The resulting building blocks are promising for incorporation in conjugated electronics materials, and as new iptycene-derived ligands for transition metals.
