There are provided a novel organic compound that has an excellent luminescent hue and that can produce high-efficiency, high-intensity, and long light output, and an organic light-emitting device containing the novel organic compound. There are provided an organic compound represented by the following general formular (I), which can emit green light with high color purity, and an organic light device containing this compound. [wherein X1 to X3 independently denote a hydrogen atom, an alkyl groups, or an aryl groups.]

There are provided 12,12-dimethyl-12H-benzo[5,6]-s-indaceno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene having a substituent at a particular position, which can emit green light with high color purity, and an organic light-emitting device containing this compound.
The substituent at a particular position is selected from a hydrogen atom, substituted and unsubstituted alkyl groups, and substituted and unsubstituted aryl groups.
