Visible-Light-Induced C2 Alkylation of Pyridine <i>N</i>-Oxides

A photoredox catalytic method has been developed for the direct C2 alkylation of pyridineN-oxides. This reaction is compatible with a range of synthetically relevant functional groups for providing efficient synthesis of a variety of C2-alkylated pyridineN-oxides under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies are consistent with the generation of a radical intermediate along the reaction pathway.

A mild and very efficient method for converting boronic acids to alcohols has been developed using the acetonitrile complex of hypofluorousacid HOF.CH3CN. Employing (18)O-labeled water results in alcohols containing a heavy oxygen isotope. The reactions were performed at room temperature, within a few minutes and in excellent yields.

A Cu-catalyzed trifluoromethylthiolation of primary and secondaryalkylboronicacids with an electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolating reagent is described. Tolerance for a variety of functional groups was observed.
