Alkoxide-alcohol complexes, R'OH.RO - , were synthesized by an ion-molecule reaction in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer. Isotope labeling was used to differentiate between the two possible complexes: ROH.R'O - and R'OH.RO - . The structure of the complexes was probed using infrared multiple photon dissociation.
