Simple unprecedented conversion of phosphine oxides and sulfides to phosphine boranes using sodium borohydride

A variety of phosphineoxides and sulfides can be efficiently converted directly to the correspondingphosphine boranes using oxalyl chloride followed by sodium borohydride. Opticallyactive P-stereogenic phosphineoxides can be converted stereospecifically to phosphine boranes with inversion of configuration by treatment with Meerwein's salt followed by sodium borohydride.

Reaction of (R)-(1-chlorovinyl)methylphenylphosphine oxide with aryl and alkenyl Grignardreagents result in highly stereoselective displacement of the halovinyl group and afford virtually enantiomerically pure arylmethylphenyl and alkenylmethylphenylphosphine oxides of inverted configuration at phosphorus.

An asymmetric arylation of H-phosphinates with aromatic iodo or bromocompounds, catalyzed by cheap and easily available nickel(II) salts, provides access to P-stereogenic phosphinates. This method features mild reaction conditions and a good functional-group compatibility that includes aniline and phenol derivatives.
