CH2Cl2, in the presence of NH4PF6, with various monodentate ligands to produce a series of stable cationic complexes of the type [RuCp*(tmbp) (L)]+[PF6]- (L = acetonitrile (6), pyridine (7), trimethyl phosphite (8), triphenylphosphine (9), 2-bromo-4,5-dimethylphosphinine (10), tert-butyl isocyanide (11), cis-cyclooctene (12), norbornene (13)). All complexes were obtained in good yields and have been

(taking ca. 8 h at room temperature), in contrast to rapid electrode-catalyzed mer-to-fac isomerization triggered by electrochemical reduction of mer-[Mn(SPS)(CO)3]. Both geometric isomers of [Mn(SPS)(CO)3] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both isomers show luminescence from a low-lying 3IL (SPS-based) excited state. The light emission of fac-[Mn(SPS)(CO)3] is largely quenched by the efficient
equiv of bipyridine is added to the Dtp2Tm(tmbp) complex, another electron transfer occurs to form the Dtp2Tm(bipy) complex along with free tmbp ligand. Astonishingly, despite the apparent trivalent nature of the thulium center, the Dtp2Tm(bipy) complex is still reactive toward neutral bipyridine to form a newcomplex in which one phospholylligand is replaced by a bipyridine radical anion. The 4,4‘,5,5‘-tetramethyl-2,2‘-biphosphinine (tmbp) dianionic sodium salt 2 reacts with [M(acac)3] (M = Co, Rh) precursors to yield the anionic [M(tmbp)2]- cobalt (3, M = Co) and rhodium (4, M = Rh) complexes. Trapping of these two species with Ph3SnCl affords [M(tmbp)SnPh3] complexes (5, M = Co) and (6, M = Rh).
