    A new liquid crystal phase, denoted modulated helical nanofilament (HNF(mod)), is formed from a very simple class of biphenyl carboxylates lacking the benzylidene aniline moieties typically found in HNF mesogens. The HNF(mod) phase represents a novel kind of nanoparticle possessing stacked aromatic rings, with potential applications in organic electronics.

    An optically active tetrahydropyran derivative represented by one of the following general formulae, a liquid crystal composition containing the derivative, and a liquid crystal device containing the composition are disclosed. The optically active tetrahydropyran derivative is a novel compound which is chemically stable, causes no coloring, has excellent optical stability, and shows a large spontaneous polarization and a quick response. The optically active tetrahydropyran derivative can show a more excellent quick response when it is used in a composition, and is useful as a component in a ferroelectric liquid crystal which induces a large spontaneous polarization.

  • Structure and Phase Transitions of Ethyl 4′-<i>n</i>-undecyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate and Its Acid Derivative

    Ethyl 4 '-n-undecyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate, 2(11)OBC, and 4 '-n-undecyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid, (11)OBC, are smectic liquid crystals precursors of low molecular weight premesogens, and of potential liquid crystal macromolecules. The single-crystal X-ray study of 2(11)OBC showed that it crystallizes in a non-centrosymmetric space group with molecules stacked along the short axis [010] and [001] without significant pi center dot center dot center dot pi or CH center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Such an arrangement may explain its strong tendency to form smectic mesophases. Both biphenyl derivatives have a rich polymesomorphism whose phase sequences were determined by DSC, optical microscopy and diffraction profiles using synchrotron radiation. These profiles indicated quite similar phase transitions in the two samples, although very different transition temperatures. Thus, the phase transitions (on cooling) of 2(11)OBC are: Isotropic -> SmA (101 degrees C)-> SmB (88 degrees C)-> SE (79 degrees C)-> crystal phase (43 degrees C), while those (on cooling) of (11)OBC are the following: Isotropic -> SmA (246 degrees C)-> SmB (192 degrees C)-> SX (162 degrees C)-> SE (148 degrees C)-> crystal phase (62 degrees C). The much higher transition temperatures for the acid derivative are explained by considering that this molecule forms dimers through classical O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds involving the carboxylic groups.
  • Synthesis and Characterization of Ferroelectric and Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystals Derived from (2S)-2-(6-Hydroxy-2-Naphthyl) Propionic Acid

    A new series of chiral materials, hexy](2s)-2-(6-(-4-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)benz propionates (HmPBNP; m = 6-18) had been prepared and their liquid crystalline properties were investigated as a function of alkyl chain length. These chiral materials exhibited novel ferroelectric S-c* and antiferroelectric Sc-A* phases and a propensity to the formation of the Sc-A* phase was found at longer alkyl chain lengths (m = 10, 12-18). An odd-even effect of the threshold voltage as a function of alkyl chain length for compounds HmPBNP (m = 12-16) possessing antiferroelectricity was observed. Spontaneous polarization and trans verse dipole moment were also measured and are discussed in terms of the elongated alkyl chain length.
