The invention relates to novel N-alkylated 3-phenyl-4-cyanopyrrole derivatives of the formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, each independently of the other, are hydrogen, halogen, methoxy or methylthio, R.sub.3 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 haloalkyl, Y is hydroxy, halogen or the --O--C(O)--R.sub.4 group, and R.sub.4 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 haloalkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl, 2-tetrahydrofuryl, 2-tetrahydropyranyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl or the --CH(R.sub.5)--XR.sub.6 group, wherein X is oxygen or sulfur, R.sub.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, and R.sub.6 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy)-C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl, phenyl or phenyl which is substituted by halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl. The invention also relates to the preparation of these compounds by N-alkylation of the starting pyrroles, as well as to microbicidal compositions which contain a compound of formula I as active ingredient. Also disclosed is a method of controlling phytopathogenic micro-organisms which comprises the use of the novel compounds.
