     Syntheses of novel primary-tertiary bisperoxides were carried out under phase transfer catalysis conditions. The bisperoxides were obtained in good yields, the reaction times not exceeding four hours.

    A process for the preparation of phenols comprises reacting in a reaction vessel (1) an a-hydroxyalkyl-substituted aromatic compound and/or an α,β-unsaturated alkyl-substituted aromatic compound with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acid catalyst, in which hydrogen peroxide is diluted with a diluent, especially acetone, so that the volume is at least 10 times the original volume, and the diluted hydrogen peroxide is supplied in separate portions to at least two parts of a reaction vessel or is scattered into the reaction vessel (1) by sprinkling. According to a preferred embodiment, the diluted hydrogen peroxide is continuously supplied to the gas phase in the reaction vessel from a scattering device (12) which is similar to but separate from a scattering device (2) for supplying the starting aromatic compound, in particular a product formed by oxidizing an isopropyl aromatic compound with molecular oxygen. According to this process, the efficiency of utilization of hydrogen peroxide is increased and a phenol of high quality can be obtained safely and in a high yield.

    A stable test device for the determination of a peroxidatively active substance comprising a carrier containing 1,4-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide and a benzidine indicator in a molar ratio of from 0.9 to 3.0. The composition can be incorporated with a carrier matrix with a ferric chelate to provide ascorbate resistance, important in a urine test for occult blood. The test device is stable under storage and heat stress and can be used to prepare a multitest strip containing a glucose test based on a peroxidase/potassium iodide indicator system.

    An aromatic compound selected from benzene and biphenyl compounds containing at least one isopropyl group is oxidized to convert at least one of the at least one isopropyl group into a 2-hydroxy-2-propyl group. The oxidation of the aromatic compound is effected with molecular oxygen in the presence of an aqueous alkali solution in an oxidative reaction vessel made of nickel at parts thereof where the vessel comes into contact with a reaction mixture. In particular, the above process suppresses the formation of byproducts and permits long-term oxidation on an industrial scale.

    A process for producing a polyhydroperoxy aromatic compound by oxidation of an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g., 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenyl and 4,4'-diisopropylnaphthalene, with molecular oxygen is disclosed, in which the oxidation is carried out in the presence of a metal ion selected from cobalt, nickel, zinc and lead ions. Even in using a reaction apparatus made of an iron-containing metal generally employed in industry, a high conversion of secondary alkyl groups can be reached, and the desired polyhydroperoxy aromatic compound can be obtained in a high yield.
