The invention relates to novel 19-thio-androstane derivatives having the general formula:
and the 4,5-dihydro analogues thereof, wherein
R1 - = hydrocarbyl(1-4C), aralkyl(7-9C), aryl(6-9C) or acyl derived from an organic carboxylic acid having 1-18 C atoms;
R2 = 0, αR4/(βR3) or an acetal group;
R3 = a free, esterified or etherified hydroxyl group; and
R4 = H or hydrocarbyl(1-4C); and wherein the broken lines indicate the optional presence of a double bond in the 1,2-position and/or 6,7-position, and to processes for obtaining same.
The novel compounds possess aromatase-inhibiting properties.

The invention relates to novel steroids having the formula:

X = CH2-S-R3 or S-S-R4;
R1 = 0 or H (βR5);
R2 = 0 or H (βR6);
R3 = H, acyl (1-18C) or alkyl (1-4C);
R4 = H, acyl (1-18C) or hydrocarbyl (1-18C), the acyl or hydrocarbyl group being optionally substituted;
R5 = OH, O acyl (1-18C) or an ether group;
R6 = OH, O acyl (1-18C) or an ether group;
and the dotted lines represent a carbon-carbon bond in 4,5-or 5,6 position; to processes for their preparation and to pharmaceutical compositions containing these steroids as active constituents.
