of polypyridyl chromium(III) complexes in alcoholic or aquaeous alkaline media have been found to result in formation of chromium(II) complexes apparently in competition with formation of the thermally equilibrated 2 E chromium(III) excited state. The upper state process probably involves oxidation of solvent species and can be used as a device for generating very reactive chromium(II) polypyridyl complexes
