An azetidinone derivative is reacted with an imide compound in the presence of a compound represented by the general formula [V]:

wherein M represents a metal atom; Hal represents a halogen atom; R⁵ represents a lower alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group, a phenoxy group, a substituted phenoxy group or a cyclopentadienyl group; and n and m are each 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 provided that n + m stands for the valence of M; and a base to thereby give a 4-substituted azetidinone derivative. The compound represented by the above general formula [V] is inexpensive and easy to handle, which makes this production process highly excellent from an industrial viewpoint.
