Manganese (III)-promoted direct phosphonylation of mono- and disubstituted arenes with dialkylphosphite afforded regioselective dialkylphosphonates in good yields. The reactions can apply to arenesbearing electron-donating groups and electron-withdrawinggroups such as ester and nitrile.

A rhodium-catalyzed cyclization using alkynes and arylphosphonic acidmonoesters for the synthesis of phosphaisocoumarins is reported. A number of arylphosphonic acidmonoesters were selectively cyclized in high yields with functional group tolerance. In addition, unsymmetrical alkynes are applied in high regioselectivity.
