The present disclosure provides for modified antibiotic compounds, methods of making modified antibiotic compounds, methods of use, products including modified antibiotic compounds, and the like. The modified antibiotic compound comprises a nitric oxide release agent covalently attached to an antibiotic molecule, such as S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine covalently attached to ampicillin.
The invention relates to triphenylphosphonium thionitrite compounds that selectively deliver nitric oxide (NO) to the mitochondria. The compounds of the invention comprise a lipophilic triphenylphosphonium cation linked to a thionitrite moiety via a linker group and a pharmaceutically acceptable anion. The compounds are useful in the treatment of diseases affected by indication of NO activity such as cancers, heart conditions, cognitive disorders and stroke.
