Arylation of Styrenes with Aryliron Complexes [CpFe(CO)2Ar]

Treatment of aryliron complexes [CpFe(CO)(2)Ar] with styrenes in boiling xylene affords the corresponding stilbenes. The aryliron complexes, which become active upon heating, serve as arylating agents in the reaction.

Abstract The synthetic utility of Rh(PPh 3 ) 3 Cl for the abstraction of small molecules from some cyclopentadienyl ironcarbonyl complexes is discussed with attention to mechanism. Terminal carbonyl and thiocarbonyl ligands are found to be removed preferentially. Experimental evidence suggests that the reaction proceeds by nucleophilic attack on the coordinated ligand by Rh(PPh 3 ) 2 Cl.

Palladium-catalyzed transmetalationbetween [CpFe(CO)2I] and arylGrignardreagents emerges as a new method for the synthesis of [CpFe(CO)2Ar]. The aryliron complexes thus formed are useful arylmetal reagents that become active upon oxidation or UV irradiation.
