The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3-cyano-3-4-[(4-[(2Z)-2-(methoxyimino)-2-phenylethyl] oxy} benzyl) oxy] phenyl} propanoic acid or salts thereof. In one form, the invention relates to the process for the preparation of (-)-3-cyano-3-4-[(4-[(2Z)-2-(methoxyimino)-2-phenylethyl]oxy}benzyl)oxy]phenyl}propanoic acid and conversion of the (-)-enantiomer to the sodium salt, sodium 3-cyano-3-4-[(4-[(2Z)-2-(methoxyimino)-2-phenylethyl]oxy}benzyl)oxy] phenyl}propanoate.

Highly efficient synthesis of 3-hydroxypyridines has been developed based on carbenoid-mediated N-O bond insertion. Treatment of delta-diazo oxime ethers with dirhodium complex Rh(2)(tfacam)(4) rapidly provides a variety of pyridines in 5-10 minutes in good to excellent yields.

A novel and efficient ytterbium promoted reductive cyclisation dimerization of α-bromo-oxime ethers affording 2,4-diarylpyrroles with high regioselectivity has been developed. Compared with the reported synthesis methods, the method has the following advantages: readily available and safe starting material, one-pot single step operation and mild and neutral reaction conditions.
