The Wittig-Horner reaction carried out in various alcohols is accompanied by transesterification of the alkyl radical of the α, β-ethylenic ester formed. The occurrence of these two reactions in the same reaction medium is affected by the behavior of: i) the alcohol (solvent and reagent), ii) potassium carbonate (reagent and catalyst). The propensity for the two reactions to occur was found to depend
Regioselective C−H Functionalization Directed by a Removable Carboxyl Group: Palladium-Catalyzed Vinylation at the Unusual Position of Indole and Related Heteroaromatic Rings
The palladium-catalyzed oxidative vinylation of indole-3-carboxylic acids with alkenes effectively proceeds via directedC-H functionalization and decarboxylation to produce the corresponding 2-vinylated indoles. Similarly, pyrrole-, furan-, and thiophenecarboxylic acids also undergo decarboxylative vinylation.

Palladium-catalyzed alkenation of thiophenes and furans by regioselective C–H bond functionalization
A palladium-catalyzed direct alkenation of thiophenes and furans has been developed in the presence of AgOAc and pyridine. A variety of olefinic substrates such as acrylates, acrylamides, and acrylonitrile can perform the direct oxidative coupling reactions with various thiophenes and furans to give the mono-alkenylated products in good yields. In most cases, the (E)-isomers were isolated as the major products. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
