This invention relates to melt extruded latent contractable elastic filaments which are formed by melt extruding certain segmented crosslinked thermoplastic polymers to form filaments, which filaments, when heat processed at elevated temperatures, significantly contract to yield an elastic filament. This invention also relates to the formation of composite covered yarns comprising the latent contractable melt extruded filaments. In addition, this invention relates to processes for forming articles from the latent contractable filaments or covered yarns comprising the contractable filaments and subsequently contracting the yarns to form an elastic article.

A thermoplastic copolyester elastomer composition comprising (A) a copolyester consisting essentially of a multiplicity of long-chain ester units and short-chain ester units joined through ester linkages, said long-chain ester units being represented bytheformula
and said short-chain ester units being represented by the formula
where G is a divalent radical remaining after the removal of hydroxyl groups from at least one long-chain glycol having a melting point of less than about 55°C and a number average molecular weight of from about 400-4000, R is a divalent radical remaining after removal of carboxyl groups from at least one dicarboxylic acid having a molecular weight of less than about 300, and D is a divalent radical remaining after the removal of hydroxyl groups from at least one aliphatic diol having a molecular weight of less than about 250, with the proviso that at least about 70 mole percent of the short-chain ester units are either ethylene terephthalate units or 1,4-butylene terephthalate units, said short-chain ester units being present in an amount of 15-95% by weight of said copolyester; and (B) from about 0.1 to 10% by weight based on said copolyester of at least one alkali metal salt of an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid containing at least 20 carbon atoms and having a molecularweightof lessthan about 1500.

A thermoplastic block copolyester resin composition comprising (A) a block copolyester which substantially consists of repeating intralinear long-chain ester units and short-chain ester units joined through ester linkages, which long-chain ester units correspond to the formula

where G is a divalent radical remaining after the removal of terminal hydroxyl groups from at least one long-chain glycol having a melting point not higher than 55°C and a number average molecular weight of from 400-4000, R is a divalent radical remaining after removal of carboxyl groups from at least one dicarboxylic acid having a molecular weight of less than 300, and D is a divalent radical remaining after removal of hydroxyl groups from at least one aliphatic diol having a molecular weight of less than 250, with the proviso that the short-chain ester units contain at least 85 mole per cent of ethylene terephthalate units, said short-chain ester units being present in an amount of 25-85% by weight, based on the copolyester; (B) a nucleating agent in an amount of 0,01 to 10% by weight, based on the copolyester, and an accelerator (C) in an amount such that the heat of cold crystallization AHH per g resin is at least 15% smaller than that of a blend of the components (A) and (B).

Foamable low-modulus thermoplastic compositions are prepared by incorporating suitable chemical blowing agents in low-modulus polymers. Specifically, low-modulus copolyetherester compositions may be foamed by use of citric acid, sodium bicarbonate or mixtures thereof as blowing agents.
