    A method of purifying a stream having an aromatic carboxy-aldehyde and an aromatic acid or the corresponding anhydride is described. The method includes reacting a hydroxylamine-containing compound with the aromatic carboxy-aldehyde in the stream to form a reaction mixture including the corresponding nitrone; adding an aqueous solvent to the reaction mixture, in an amount and under conditions effective to solubilize the nitrone but not the organic acid or the corresponding anhydride; and separating the solubilized nitrone from the non-solubilized organic acid. The nitrone is a water soluble nitrone.

    The disclosure provides a method for alcoholysis of a polycarbonate-containing composition comprising a polycarbonate and a component comprising a phosphorus-containing flame retardant, an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, or a combination of the phosphorus-containing flame retardant and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. The method comprises contacting the composition with a solvent that forms a solution or a filterable suspension of the component but not the polycarbonate; separating the solution or the filterable suspension from the polycarbonate; and heating the polycarbonate in the presence of an alcohol and a catalyst at a temperature from 70° C. to 200° C., and a pressure from 5 mbar to 40 bar for a time sufficient to depolymerize the polycarbonate and produce a dihydroxy aromatic compound and a dialkyl carbonate.

    Liquid crystal polycarbonates are made by forming a reaction mixture containing (a) an activated diaryl carbonate; (b) at least two species of aromatic diols selected from among resorcinol, 4,4′-biphenol, hydroquinone, methylhydroquinone, 4,4′-dihydroxyphenylether, dihydroxynaphthalene, including in particular the 2,6, 1,5, and 2,7 isomers, 4,4′-dihydroxybenzophenone and 2,6-dihydroxyanthraquinone (anthraflavic acid); and (c) optionally bisphenol A in a maximum amount of 10 mole %; and processing the reaction mixture in a melt transesterification reaction to form a liquid crystal polycarbonate. While the product composition has the same overall characteristics as compositions made using diphenyl carbonate as the donor moiety for the carbonate linkage, they are analytically distinguishable because of limited incorporation of intermediate or end-cap residues derived from the activated diaryl carbonate.

    Compositions for use in tri-layer applications are described herein, wherein the composition has a matrix and includes: a formulated polymer comprising at least one type of silicon-based moiety forming the matrix of the polymer, a plurality of vinyl groups coupled to the matrix of the polymer, and a plurality of phenyl groups coupled to the matrix of the polymer, at least one condensation catalyst, and at least one solvent. Tri-layer structures are also contemplated herein that comprise an organic underlayer (first layer), antireflective compositions and/or films contemplated herein (second layer) and a photoresist material (third layer) that are coupled to one another. Methods of producing a composition for tri-layer patterning applications includes: providing a formulated polymer comprising at least one type of silicon-based moiety forming the matrix of the polymer, a plurality of vinyl groups coupled to the matrix of the polymer, and a plurality of phenyl groups coupled to the matrix of the polymer, providing at least one condensation catalyst, providing at least one solvent, providing at least one pH modifier, blending the formulated polymer and part of the at least one solvent in a reaction vessel to form a reactive mixture; and incorporating the at least one pH modifier, the at least one condensation catalyst and the remaining at least one solvent into the reactive mixture to form the composition.
