  A class of 4-piperidinones and corresponding dihydropyridinones having a phenyl substituent at one .beta.-position, an alkyl, alkenyl or propargyl group at the 1-position and an optional substituent at the other .beta.-position are broad-spectrum herbicides. The compounds bear a meta-substituent on the phenyl ring, and are particularly suited for use as herbicides in cotton culture.
