An effective approach to the synthesis of functionalized piperidines via a one-pot multicomponent reaction of aniline, β-ketoester and aldehyde in the presence of alum as an efficient catalyst has been reported. The present procedure offers advantages such as simple workup, short reaction time and offers rapid access to a variety of functionalized piperidines.

Multi-component synthesis of highly functionalized piperidines has been demonstrated using ‘fully green’ l-proline nitrate as recyclable room temperature ionic liquid. Recycling of the catalyst was possible up to five runs without loss of catalyst activity.

A convenient, simple, and multicomponent coupling strategy has been developed for the synthesis of highly functionalized tetrahydropyridines using FeCl3/SiO2 NPs as catalyst. This method demonstrated five-component coupling reactions of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, aromatic aldehydes and amines without an inert atmosphere. Atom economy, good yields, environmentally benign, and mild reaction conditions are some of the important features of this protocol. Notably, this catalyst could be recycled and reused for several times without noticeably decreasing the catalytic activity.
