  New process for the preparation of known trifluoromethylphenyl oxyphenyl ether compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein X stands for fluorine, chlorine or bromine and R for moieties, substituted if desired, of the series alkyl, alkenyl and alkinyl, by reacting 1,2-dihalogen-4-trifluoromethylbenzenes of the formula ##STR2## in which X and X.sup.1 independently of one another stand for fluorine, chlorine or bromine, with phenols of the formula ##STR3## in which R has the meaning given above, and basic alkali or alkaline earth compounds or with the salts formed from the phenols of formula (III) and the basic alkali or alkaline earth compounds, in the presence of diluents at temperatures between 60.degree. and 120.degree. C. The compounds of the formula (I) are intermediates for the synthesis of herbicides.

  Verfahren zur Herstellung von Trifluormethylphenyl-oxyphenyl-äthern der Formel in welcher X für Fluor, Chlor oder Brom steht und R für gegebenenfalls substituierte Reste aus der Reihe Alkyl, Alkenyl und Alkinyl steht, durch Umsetzung von 1,2-Dihalogen-4-trifluormethylben- zolen der Formel in welcher X und X' unabhängig voneinanderfür Fluor, Chlor oder Brom stehen, mit Phenolen der Formel in welcher R die oben angegebene Bedeutung hat, und basischen Alkali- oder Erdalkaliverbindungen bzw. mit den aus den Phenolen der Formel (III) und den basischen Alkali- oder Erdalkaliverbindungen gebildeten Salzen in Gegenwart von Verdünnungsmitteln bei Temperaturen zwischen 60 und 120°C. Die Stoffe der Formel (I) können als Zwischenprodukte zur Synthese von Herbiziden verwendet werden.
