Efficient Copper-Free PdCl2(PCy3)2-Catalyzed Sonogashira Coupling of Aryl Chlorides with Terminal Alkynes

[GRAPHICS]Under copper-free conditions and with Cs2CO3 as a base, PdCl2(PCy3)(2) showed high catalytic activity for cross-coupling of electron-rich, electron-neutral, and electron-deficient aryl chlorides with a variety of terminal alkynes in DMSO at 100-120 degrees C affording internal arylated alkynes in good to excellent yields.

We have developed a highly effective copper-catalyzeddecarboxylativecoupling of alkynylcarboxylic acids with various aryl and alkyl halides at 2 mol% loading of copper. This method is simple, economical and practical for the synthesis of disubstituted alkyne compounds.

The catalyticcoupling of terminalacetylenes with iodoarenes and diaryliodoniumsalts are shown to occur in aqueous K2CO3 in the presence of 10 mol.% Bu3N under very mild conditions using PdCl2(PPh3)2 and CuI as catalyst precursor to give substituted tolans in high yields.
