The halide salt-mediated electrooxidation utilizing either of the alpha- or beta-thiodideoxyglycosides proceeded smoothly at -78 degrees C to give dideoxynucleosides in a beta-selective manner, presumably through a 1-halo-substituted glycosyl donor.
