In situ generated magnesium cyanide is a convenient, readily available, non‐volatile and organic‐soluble reagent for hydrocyanation reactions. Efficient nucleophilic cyanation of π‐electrophiles such as nitronates, conjugated nitrosoalkenes, imines, α,β‐unsaturated ketones, methylenemalonates and azoalkenes was demonstrated.

A synthesis of hitherto unknown bicyclic nitroso acetals possessing two annulated six-membered rings is accomplished. The synthesis comprises formal [3+3] cycloaddition of six-membered cyclic nitronates with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes. Some chemicaltransformations and conformational preferability of the obtained nitroso acetals are discussed.

In this article, comprehensive studies on the nucleophilic chlorination and bromination of readily available six-membered cyclic nitronates (1,2-oxazine-N-oxides) are reported. Under optimized conditions (POCl3 or (COBr)2 with Hünig's base), 3-halo-substituted 1,2-oxazines, which are difficult to access by other routes, were obtained in good to high yields. The first formal [3 + 3]-cycloaddition of nitronates with donor–acceptorcyclopropanes is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by ytterbium trifluoromethanesulfonate and leads to hitherto unknown bicyclic nitrosoacetals, possessing two annelated six-membered rings.
