Kinetically controlled catalytic cross‐metathesis reactions that generate (Z)‐α,β‐unsaturated esters selectively are disclosed. A key finding is that the presence of acetonitrile obviates the need for using excess amounts of a more valuable terminal alkene substrates. We have developed Pd-catalyzed oxidativecyclization reactions of a wide range of azulene-2-carboxylic acids with a large number of activated as well as unactivated 1,3-dienes, consequently allowing a streamlined synthetic method for the selective preparation of monosubstituted alkenyl dihydroazulenolactones and their derivatives.
